Fixed-Range Versus Session Profiles in Practice

When to build a profile across a multi-day swing versus sticking to a single session composite.

Session profiles answer questions about today’s auction: where did balance form, and how did the open relate to yesterday? Fixed-range profiles answer questions about a swing: where did volume accumulate between two pivot events?

Swing traders often overuse session profiles when the decision horizon is several days. Conversely, day traders who only look at a week-long fixed range can miss the developing POC that will matter for the next hour.

A workable split: use a fixed-range profile to define the larger acceptance zone you refuse to fight, then drop to the session profile for timing and inventory. If the two conflict—session value building against the fixed-range POC—stand aside until one auction yields.

Our Foundations workbook includes side-by-side exercises on the same instrument so you feel the difference with your own markings rather than memorizing definitions.
